But can you get back into the US without a passport?

Let’s take a Canadian getaway! It’s actually quite drivable from Central New York. So what’s your problem? Ah, yes! It’s a foreign country … and you’d like to be admitted back into the US. However, you don’t have a passport. That could take months to get.

But wait, there’s another option, an enhanced driver license (EDL).


New York and other states have been offering enhanced driver licenses for US citizens. Your enhanced license can be used in place of a passport from Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries – but only if you’re driving. It is not acceptable for air travel. Check with a travel agent or cruise line for the rules that apply for the country you plan to visit.

Ok. So Canada, it is! Let’s go to the NYS DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) and start the application process:

To prove your identity and age you will need your original Social Security card, or, if you already have a NYS Driver’s License, an official document with your social security number, name and address; e.g., a U.S. computer-printed pay stub. You’ll also need your U.S. birth certificate or certificate of citizenship/naturalization and proof of New York State residency.

There are several options of the types of identification papers which you will need. The DMV website (http://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-enhanced-driver-license-edl) will take you through the whole process.

What if the children don’t have passports? Will you have to leave them in Canada when you go? Absolutely not (even though some of you may want to…). For minors who drive, parents can provide a certification form to the DMV so your minor can get an enhanced license.

For children under the age of 15, you should have a certified copy of their American birth certificate and written parental consent (if arriving with a single parent.) Verify all required documents for each family member with a local travel agent who is up to date on any recent changes in international law.
