Practical Auto Gift for Any Budget

If you want to be a secret Santa, or just get the perfect, last-minute practical gift for a loved one, then consider what I describe as a winter car kit.

It’s something you put together yourself. It’ll fit most any budget. You fill it with as many items as you like. It’s a gift for most any occasion – Christmas, birthday, Valentine’s.

To call it a kit, you’ll need a container of some sort – such as a small duffel bag, or gym bag, or backpack or plastic container. Then start filling it with some or all of the following items.

Snow brush/ice scraper. (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve broken an ice scraper in my hurried attempt to clear ice from the windshield. It’s a blessing to have an extra one handy.)

De-icer. (On those frigid days when your lock is frozen, you’ll appreciate getting into your car and on your way without undue delay.)

Floor mat. (It’s a great way to protect your interior from snow and mud, plus, if you get stuck in the snow, you can place it under the tire to gain traction.)

Kat litter. (This is also good for traction.)

Collapsible shovel. (If you get stuck in the snow away from home, you’ll wish you had a shovel.)

Pair of insulated gloves. (If you leave home without your gloves, you’ll appreciate having an extra pair available.)

Flashlight. (With winter’s shortened daylight, chances are you’ll have car trouble when it’s dark.)

A blanket. (It’s winter. You might appreciate a bit of extra protection while waiting for the auto club tow truck.)

Jumper cables. (Winter is hard on batteries. You’ll never know when you’ll need a jump-start.)

Fire extinguisher, such as the ABC dry chemical one. (What’s the Boy Scout motto? Be Prepared.)

Emergency signaling devices, such as roadside flares and florescent distress flag (to hang on the antenna or out the window).

First aid kit with pocket knife. (This is good to have on hand any time of year.)

Water and snack food including energy bars. (If you’re stuck for awhile, you’ll be surprised how thirsty and hungry you feel.)
